An defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, while staff have been instructed to avoid discussing classified information in all vehicles.
Safety Guidance for MoD Staff
In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about classified information while riding in Chinese vehicles.
He stated that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a issue in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any kind of car, due to the growing threats of surveillance that exist in all automobile, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

The announcement comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to disable buses and bring disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly shining lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
