One Piece Ends a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until April, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will release two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — including more content, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a half-year break that began in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes appeared during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the series covering one chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or more to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each annually, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
