Whenever a major prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
