We have watched over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of love into a symbol of hostility who endorses specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this change developed more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Jesus that I grew up with, since in theory Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding of him because they identify as skeptics or doubters or nones. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price within Christian narrative.

The evident and direct fact that the Jesus from scripture requests a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy has consistently rendered the Christian faith rather a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Finest Within Us
Hence I have become inspired to observe the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge over the last twelve months.
