Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
